I replied to a comment on my post "On Nuclear War" after discussing some more on the subject in class. It brought up some very interesting ideas so I want to hear some more feedback. My opinion can be expressed fairly simply: Nuclear war is never moral. That includes Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
I want to know what you think about the responsiblity of our country is when it comes to war. Why are we and should we be different? I think the US should be held to a higher standard when it comes to war and international relations. We claim to be a democracy and an advocate of freedom. Immoral wars and the torture of our enemies do not fit in with that ideal.
So, bring on the comments! I'd like to hear from as many readers of TPM as I can.

I am definitely idealistic so the stuff I say isn't neccarily practical but I'm trying to propose ideas that would be ethical in war. My problem with nuclear weapons isn't the defense issue. I don't think we would seriously use them for a 9/11 like terrorist attack. Who would we bomb? There are leaders who are crazy enough to use them but ideally we aren't.
The real issue is what nuclear weapons are designed to do. It's not about protecting ourselves (except for the idea that if you nuke us, we'll nuke you). If the world ever came to nuclear war it would be about wiping out as much of another country as possible EVEN if we were getting wiped out ourselves.
Humanity should be better than that. The problem is crazy people in charge of armies and weapons. More in a bit ...
