Apparently so for some churches: Some megachurches closing on Christmas
Regardless of your denomination, if you're a Christian, you should make some attempt to commemorate the birth of Jesus. That's pretty much my opinion. You see so many people at Catholic masses on Christmas and Easter because they feel that they should go. Even if they are there for the wrong reasons, there is a natural Christian tendency to celebrate these holy days (holidays). Where should people go to celebrate the Lord's birth if not a church - a public place of worship.
Low attendance is a pathetic reason for cancelling a service. Think about it this way, on the first Christmas there weren't that many people that were willing to welcome Jesus either.

Does going on the 24th to Mass satisfy the obligation for us Catholics, no one I know seems to well know?
I believe so, as long as its the vigil mass. Usually its a later one ... I'm a big fan of "midnight mass" even though the ones I have been to recently were at 10 or something.
