A couple of us watched ...

... the director's cut of Donnie Darko tonight. I think that movie will forever be one of my favorites. It does has some pointless swearing and sexual dialogue, but overall its a beautiful, brilliantly put together movie. I love the camera work, the acting, and especially the story. Even though the director's cut makes a little more sense on its own, DD is still a deep film that takes some thought to understand.

My final analysis (for those who have seen the film): All of the events following the jet engine incident at the beginning of the movie lead up to Gretchen being killed. Though it doesn't seem like it, I think she is the focus of all of the tangent universe. Once Donnie has found that he is not alone, he is willing to sacrifice himself for everyone else. He goes from an agnostic standpoint to some kind of belief in God. Something that hit me this time I watched it was that the whole thing seemed to be for Donnie's sake, to save him from being alone and believing that the truth of existence was that "every creature on earth dies alone."

Watch it!
