I have never been a fan of syndicated radio. It's the stations that have a unique, local personality that work well for me. So, when I heard about Jack FM while at home over Christmas break (our local Jack ... the site doesn't really exist yet), I was kind of upset. Here's a useful article that explains the idea.
All of a sudden, stations sold out to this national "variety hits" format and now they don't have DJ's. Yes, it's annoying to have too much talking, too many ads an not enough music, but I would take that over a list of preprogrammed "hits" anyday. It's the same idea that makes Wal*Mart and McDonalds work so well: you get the same stuff anywhere. It's convienient and cheap, that's true, but sometimes you need that individual character. If I want radio that's the same everywhere, I'll get satellite radio. If I don't want a certain genre I'll use CD's or my mp3 player.

Thanks for rediscovering my blog and posting! It really is an honor to know a seminarian is reading it!
