Check out Americans on Call.
To me it seems like a brilliant idea: you take people willing to commit to help people and unite them under a common banner. It's a totally Christian idea that can work for anybody. All it requires is a willingness to give of yourself to help someone.
I really think this is a significant idea that could end almost end abortion if implemented, without even having to change the law. If there are people out there who will help women considering an abortion, the demand for it will go away. It is still vitally important to spread the truth of what abortion really is (through praying at clinics, the media, etc.) but for the women who are doing it only because they feel like they have no other option, this is a way to present a way out. It is good marketing to "brand" your product with a symbol, and through the AOC banner you present a unified front of people who will help out someone in need.
Yes, the laws need to be changed to reflect the dignity of the a human person, but that comes from the people. The government can not change minds; we must show the reality of abortion and back up our words with actions. I don't think people can believe in a pro-life movement that only tells people that abortion is wrong. Being "on call" is a way to prove that you really believe what you are preaching.

I agree! I think I heard mention of this at the Pro-life rally here in my own state and was really excited. Thanks for the link and the info.
Is abortion violence justified in this scenario:
http://www.glasskite.com/site-gregiswrong/sandwich_board/ok_to_murder_abortion_doctors.htm
Murder is never justifiable, whether we support the general cause or not. In this case, if it led to more abortions, that's a tragedy but not necessarily the sniper's fault or the fault of anyone who stopped him. That's the key to understanding the pro-life idea: all life is to be respected, even an abortion doctor's. People often say things like, "What if we could have killed Hitler ..." Well, maybe it would have saved lives, but it takes away the free will that is fundamental to humanity. We are all responsible for our actions. In the area of abortion, we are responsible for ending it, but not by denying the principles that we supposedly defend.
P.S. This may not convince someone looking at the situation from a non-Christian standpoint, but the idea is that whether you believe in it or not, this is how Christians claim they should act.
Thanks for commenting.
oh so killing people is always wrong always all the time.
so no christian should join the army right?
That's a question I'll leave up for other people who are smarter than me. My words were that murder is always wrong. Though personally, I am highly skeptical of modern war, I think that self-defense is justifiable.
There's a big difference between intentionally killing a person (born or unborn)when they have done nothing to you and defending yourself or your country against an attacking force. Thought I'm not endorsing any particular war or policy, I believe that there can be a just war.
Cool I see.
So if a guy was walking up to 10 kids playing in a park with a machine gun and told you he was going to kill them all, would it be ok for a nearby hunter to take they evil man out first?
Anonymous,
I love having a discussion on here and appreciate your persistence, but what is the point of this?
If you want to make a point please just say it. Right now it just looks like you're trying to argue me out of believing something or trying to get me to contradict myself.
Please don't take this as an insult, just say what you want to say and let me respond. I'm not going to answer cryptic example questions forever.
Thanks!
ya
i think it reveals that Christians value adult life more than zygote life - despite their protests.
That statement has a few problems: First off, there are lots of Christians who don't have a problem with abortion. You can't just generalize what all Christians believe, whether I think they're right or wrong.
Secondly, it's easy for all people to be more affected by violence or murder that they can see or that affects someone they know. Abortion is a silent crime that, besides being legal in our country, is done in a secretive manner. Compare this to war or terrorism. On TV we can see bodies and blood and put a face on the victims. The victims of abortion are nameless and faceless. We only know that they exist.
So, you can't judge the idea that abortion is wrong because of the shortcomings of the people that fight for it. I absolutely believe that abortion is just as bad as any other kind of murder and should be stopped. I'll do what I can, but I will not condone an evil act (killing abortion doctors, etc.) to do it. I believe that you should not do something evil, even if good will come of it. You lose your integrity and the truth of what you're fighting for.
"I believe that you should not do something evil, even if good will come of it."
by "evil" here i guess you mean you 'wouldn't shoot someone' even if good would come of it.
I don't believe that for a second. Given a situation in which offing a psycho would save the lives of dozens of innocent children, we'd all do it in a second.
Imagine the experience of reading a superman comic book if you follow your belief system.
It goes against our deepest intuitions.
You're right, it is one of our deepest instincts to protect the innocent. In the case you keep bringing up, stopping someone from shooting kids would be a good thing. That's not evil. You don't even need to kill someone to stop them.
So what are you telling me that I should believe about abortion doctors? That to be truly pro-life, I should stop abortions from being performed at all costs?
An addition to the above:
If we pledge to anything "at all costs" only trouble will come of it. Sure, live might be saved, but by abandoning our principles we can cause much more damage. Also, in our case, the law is against us. Abortion is protected and praised in society as a whole. It's a tough situation that we find ourselves in, but I think the best thing we can do is to work within the limits of the law for the end of abortion while working to change the hearts and minds of our culture.
nah its already a given in this scenario that lives will be saved.
Which scenario?
http://www.glasskite.com/site-gregiswrong/thought_experiments/abortion.htm
It's still not right. That's an evil act that happened to produce good results. Regaredless, in real life, we cannot know all of the effects of our actions and therefore should always act in accordance with the values that we believe in.
hmm
so just so we're clear.
Harriet Tubman comes across a farm house in which there are 10 children tied up in a bag and screaming for the lord to save them. A white man comes up with a torch and the intent to light the bag on fire because these particular slaves he owns have a low cotton production yield and are hence worthless.
Tubman can shoot the man and bring the 10 kids with her party to the north where they will live in freedom.
Which statement is correct:
It is right for Tubman to shoot the man and save the children.
It is wrong for Tubman to shoot the man. Let them burn and God will sort it out.
