... Vatican Decries Both Cartoons and Islamic Response.
At first, it can be easy to think, "The Vatican is opposing free speech!" but I just don't think that's how it is. As Christians we are called to love ... everybody. That may be tought, but that's how it goes. Blame Jesus. Anyway, in the case of these cartoons, they were intended to be offensive, almost as an example of free speech. I can easily identify with that sentiment, but I am also offended when people make fun of Christianity in the media, but I've learned how to deal with it.
The bottom line is that you shouldn't make fun of peoples' religion, but you should also not react violently when your religion is made fun of. Leave it to the Catholic Church to balance on the line in between.

There is a diffrence between the Holy Father and the bureocrats in the Vatican.
The Holy See should have called this out for what it is, madness, violence in the name of a religion that has been more or less devoted to destroying Christendom since year of OUR (and everyone elses') Lord 700.
I think this an example of "loving your enemies." Even if muslim extremists think the Church should be destroyed, we have to love them as people. That does not include tolerating everything, but love must be there.
