On Prayer

Today I was thinking about how to make prayer real, no matter what type of prayer you are doing. It seems like that we usually put prayer in a place totally different than conversations with other people - as in human beings on earth - when we should really be conversing with God.

The idea is that when you are talking to someone you really care about, you are totally there. That is something that my spiritual director talks about: being totally present to someone, whether it's God or a good friend. What I imagine is that when we do this, we are opening ourselves up and, even when listening, we are giving of ourself. When it comes to a "pre-set" prayer like the Rosary or even the Mass, we can do the same thing. No matter what we're saying or how used to it we are, if we just conciously offer ourselves to God while we do it, prayer will be real (and great!).
