I know that Pope Benedict's trip is over and thankfully, it went well, but I wanted to address this story: Pope hailed for praying toward Mecca like Muslims.
The news media has a tendency to make every little thing that a famous person does a big deal. So, is the pope being a relativist? Is he saying that there are no differences between Christianity and Islam?
I would think not. Praying in a mosque does not make you a muslim any more than praying in a church make you a christian. Also, there is a long tradition of praying towards the east in Christianity. That's why priests faced towards the altar before Vatican II: they were facing east.
I'm sure some people got all upset that Pope Benedict didn't condemn the muslims. Fortunately for us, he's a much holier and wiser man than that. He is attempting true dialogue and is doing it in the spirit of Christ.

I think the whole thing was just blown out of proportion. I mean, you can pray anywhere, and what better place to do that than in a house of God. So what if it's not your own.
