Veronika Meyer's Adventure to Mount Everest
In May 2003, St. Jude Medical mechanical heart valve recipient, Veronika Meyer, attempted to reach the peak of Mount Everest on the 50th anniversary of the first successful ascent of the mountain (May 29, 1953).
Despite their best efforts, Veronika and her group had to turn back from the summit on May 22 due to a heavy storm. The expedition, led by Kari Kobler of Swiss-based Kobler & Partner, was tantalizingly close to the top, having climbed to 8,600 meters or 28,215 feet, just below the famous Second Step landmark. (The summit of Mount Everest stands at 8,850 meters or 29,035 feet.)
Check out her journal and the photo album on the left of the page.
