After numerous listenings, I am finally able to give my official pronouncement on Fall Out Boy's new album, Infinity On High: buy it.
It's very different from their other CDs but it is just as good. Overall, it's more soulful with many obvious hip-hop and r&b influences (Jay-Z introduces the album!) especially on the first single, "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" and "I'm Like A Lawyer ..." but other songs rock extremely hard, such as the opener, "Thriller." At certain moments, the album makes me think of Panic! At The Disco and My Chemical Romance, but they always turn back to the things that make me love FOB's music: unabashed, energetic and anthemic rock.
Listening to the album, you can tell FOB has thought about their fame and taken in various influences while still looking back to their punk (and sometimes hardcore) roots. Though I don't always like their lyrics (or videos), Fall Out Boy has created consistently catchy and thoughtful music and are worth checking out.
