flying solo

My pastor was on vacation this past week. That meant that I did everything.

"Everything" included: two full weekends of Masses, two funerals, Mass at the prison, helping run two Bingos, and a bunch of other random things, including substitute-teaching two freshman religion classes.

Now, I'm not complaining. Yes, it was tiring and even overwhelming at times, but it was great to be involved with every aspect of the parish. You really feel connected to the people of the parish when you are the one on call. You are the one who goes to the hospital to anoint someone on their deathbed, even if you just got back to the rectory. You are the one who makes decisions (mostly little ones, fortunately).

The whole experience has been a good one - a time to learn what it's like to be the priest in a parish and a time to focus, keep organized and get things done.
However, I think my day off this week will be just a little more relaxing.
