What's going on?
After a busy weekend, I've been on my own for the past couple days, with my pastor away at a conference. It's always interesting when I'm here by myself. We have a decent sized staff, so it's not like there's a big change in my "workload," but there is the experience of being the priest. It teaches you a lesson about pouring yourself out for a parish. That's still something I'm learning to do.
Any meaningful moments?
I'm always amazed by how appreciative people are towards their priests. Whether it's the guys at the prison or a parishioner working at Bingo, their thanks is incredibly humbling. If there's something I would want to share with the people I minister to, it's how much they inspire me by their dedication and desire for God.
In my free time ...
I find myself wanting to play music lately. So I've done some sporadic drumming in the rectory basement (when the pastor's not around. I don't want to subject him to that racket) and some sporadic guitar playing out on our porch.
I haven't written any songs for quite a while and I'd like to get back into that. It just takes a little discipline.
Also, O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a fantastically good movie. I'm watching it right now.
Thought for the moment
The life of the priesthood - or any life, for that matter - is not one where you figure out how to be the person God made you to be one day and then just live in that. It's a daily fight to choose love - to choose God - and then live that out. It's only in hindsight that we see the big leaps we've made in our journey with God.
