Various papal coverage:

1. Western Wall rabbi says pope should not wear cross at site.

2. Talk about the Pope and condoms is all over the place:
First: Pope says condoms are not the solution to Aids - they make it worse
Then: Vatican defends pope condoms stand, criticism mounts
And finally: Roland Martin suggests that Pope Benedict needs to face reality and accept moral evils.
He is absolutely correct that condoms are not the solution to stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS. He is also 100 percent correct that the only surefire way of stopping HIV/AIDS, when it comes to sex, is to practice abstinence. That is clearly within the teachings of the Bible and the Catholic Church, and he will find no disagreement from me.

Now the reality.

People are having sex. Catholics are having sex. Heck, some Catholic priests have abandoned their oath and have had sex.

As a layman and the husband of a pastor, I know the difference between utopia and reality, and it is the responsibility of the faith community to deal with the real world.

And frankly, Pope Benedict clearly shows he doesn't get it.

What we need today are our church leaders preaching, teaching and imploring their members not to go to bed with anyone and everyone. We also need church leaders who are willing to stand up and tell folks that if they do choose to sin -- that's what the church and other faith leaders consider sex outside of marriage -- then you had better take the necessary precautions to protect yourself.
Then there's this sentence that seems to blame Catholicism for the spread of the disease:
While Catholicism expands on the continent of Africa, we are seeing the expansion of HIV/AIDS as well. Sub-Saharan Africa has 22 million people infected with HIV.
3. Fr. Z reports on the "Year of the Priesthood" starting June 19th.

4. From AmericanPapist: The Vatican website will soon have Chinese as one of its language options. Also, the Vatican site design based on the White House site that I posted earlier is now online with working links. So, if you find the actual Vatican site as mysterious and difficult to navigate as I do, check it out.

That article about Martin makes me upset. Of course the Pope knows that some Catholics have not followed the teachings of the Church.

It sounds like she is saying that, because a lot of Catholics are doing something, it should be accepted as ok by the Church. If a bunch of Catholics decided to have a day of breaking windows, should that be considered a tradition with a capitol T by the Church?

The main purpose of the Church,as I see it, is to bring the faithful closer to God by instructing them in the teachings and Traditions of the Church.

No, it's not going to be a "utopia" as she refers to it because we are human and we sin.

The utopia she wants is in Heaven and if she wants to get there, the sure way is to follow Jesus' teachings through the Church.

We shouldn't have to accept Catholics having sex outside of marriage as normal just because it is happening. I refuse to accept that and so does the Pope.
