River search called off; will not resume

The search for the young man who possibly jumped off the Fort Steuben bridge has been called off for Sunday.

Emergency crews spent much of Saturday and Sunday searching the Ohio River for former Franciscan University student 24-year-old Matt Couvey.

Police said after a night of partying, Couvey and Franciscan University student 25-year-old Ryan Samson decided to jump from the bridge sometime Saturday morning. Samson told police that after he jumped, he swam to shore and never saw Couvey jump.

The body of Matthew Covey, Class of 2005, was recovered this afternoon from the Ohio River. Father Terence Henry, TOR, and several Franciscan University priests were able to bless Matt’s body and minister to his parents at the Steubenville Marina. Please pray for the repose of Matt’s soul and for the consolation and peace of his family.
