helpful hints

As I come to the end of my time in seminary, I've been thinking about everything I've learned. Some of those things are more profound than others. I've learned about my relationship with God, the teachings and history of the Church and many other things.

Here are some random ideas I've been thinking about that may be helpful for those entering the seminary. It includes things that are

- Read the Bible. Get a good grip on it as a whole.

- Be a cantor. Become comfortable singing in public.

- Look through the Sacramentary (or the Missal, as it's soon to be known). It is extremely helpful to know where to find things and how to set it up.

- Wash your black clothes correctly or they will end up in various shades of gray.

- I'm the last one to tell you this, but don't buy too many books. People will give you books, you'll get books for class ... and they're a pain to move.

- Journal. As in the verb. It's amazing to see how you've changed throughout the formation process.

- Keep reading, and not just for class. That's important, but you need stories and inspiration as well.

- Don't be a hermit - in a couple senses: First, know what's going on in the world. Know what you can pray for, what people are talking about and what people care about. Second, don't seclude yourself in your room so you can study all the time. Seminary is a total experience, experience it all.

- (on a related note) Go outside. Exercise, walk, enjoy nature.

- Always write "thank you" cards. Answer letters and emails. Stay in touch with the people of your diocese who care about you.

- Don't freak out. You are in seminary because you love God, remember that. When things get tough, think about that first moment when you thought God might want you to be a priest. Hang on to the knowledge that God brought you to where you are.

More to come. Anything anyone else would want to add?
